How I Choose the Right Puppy for You**
Knowing how to choose the right puppy is one of the most important parts of bringing a dog into your home.
While appearance often draws people in, it has very little to do with whether that puppy will be the right fit for your lifestyle. What matters far more is temperament, personality, and how that individual puppy develops.
This is where personality evaluation becomes essential.
Why Most People Choose the Wrong Puppy
Most people, understandably, don’t know how to choose a puppy.
They select based on things that have little to do with long-term success—color, markings, or which puppy happens to walk up to them first. While those things may feel meaningful in the moment, they don’t predict how that dog will fit into your life over the next 10–15 years.
That’s where an experienced breeder plays a critical role.
How I Evaluate Puppies
As puppies develop, I carefully observe and evaluate each one for:
- temperament and confidence
- energy level
- social behavior
- response to handling and new environments
- interaction with people and littermates
This evaluation is not based on a single moment—it happens over time as the puppies grow and their personalities become more defined.
I also utilize structured assessments, including elements of the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test, along with real-world exposure to different sights, sounds, and situations.
Matching the Puppy to the Home
Choosing the right puppy is not just about the puppy—it’s about the home.
I take into consideration:
- experience level of the owner
- activity level of the household
- presence of children or other animals
- expectations for the dog
A high-energy, bold puppy may thrive in an active, experienced home, while a more reserved puppy may do better in a quieter environment.
My goal is not to let buyers “pick a puppy.”
My goal is to ensure that you go home with the right puppy.
Why This Matters
When puppies are chosen based on appearance or impulse rather than personality and fit, the likelihood of problems increases.
This can lead to:
- frustration for the owner
- behavioral issues
- and, in some cases, dogs being rehomed or returned
Taking the time to evaluate properly—and match thoughtfully—greatly increases the chances of a successful, long-term relationship.
The TerraSassa Approach
At TerraSassa, placement decisions are based on fit, not preference alone.
Every puppy is evaluated as an individual, and every home is considered carefully. In many cases, I will recommend a puppy that may not have been the one initially requested—because it is the better match.
This approach leads to more stable placements, better outcomes, and ultimately, happier dogs and owners.
